Diagnosis
Male is similar to I. ferox by (a) posterior hamule hollowed out internally, with dense hair tuft in hollow, and at least base or apex black; (b) apical halves S4-6 black, at most with pale dorsal streak; (c) foliations on S8 over 1/3 as deep as segment is high. However, differs by (1) mostly found on forested rivers from W Uganda, W Tanzania and N Zambia to Gabon; (2) larger size, Hw 46-51 mm; (3) labrum black with 2 large central pale spots, black band across clypeus, apices of vertex black; (4) posterior hamule black, often with pale apex; (5) cerci with sharp rather than blunt ventral angle. Habitat description
Mostly rivers, but also standing waters and possibly flowing channels in marshes, in open areas in forest. Often with emergent vegetation and a sandy and/or soft (like muddy) bottom. From 300 to 1300 m above sea level.
